Dunkirk

Rules for Movie Memory Duel:
1)  Both halves of Brerin must have watched the movie together.
2)  It must be at least 3 months since having seen the movie.
3) Each half is given 3 minutes to compose their honest memories of the movies.

Erin

This movie is about World War II where a number of British people are stranded and need the help of volunteers in their fishing boats to rescue them. It is told in three intertwined parts and each part is on a different scale. The first is told from the perspective of people on the beach waiting for rescue on the scale of a week or so, the next is from the point of view of a volunteer rescuer on their boat told over the course of a day, and the last is told from a pilot’s perspective over the course of an hour. It is an odd form of storytelling that is honestly a little bit confusing to follow and doesn’t really make you care for any particular character. I was hoping for some revelation at the intersection of the timelines, but there was really no payoff.

Brad

So this is a movie by Christopher Nolan about an event during World War II. It follows the evacuation of Dunkirk, which is a city or the name of the beach, of thousands of British and maybe US and French troops. While they are evacuating they are under assault by some enemy planes flying overhead. The whole timeline of the movie is messed up. It’s pieced together non-linearly and honestly I couldn’t really follow it my first time watching. There was a lot of noise and little dialogue in the movie. At one point the main soldier group the film is following are trapped in a ship that is filling up with water and they narrowly escape. There’s too many soldiers to evacuate them all. Some get left behind. It happens over several days. I remember a lot of sirens going off.

Hindsight Analysis – We saw this movie near its release July 2017, a little over two years ago. Erin appears to remember the structure of the movie better than Brad though neither is completely off. Erin forgot that the movie was named Dunkirk though. Neither of could remember any actors, though apparently Harry Styles was in it, who knew! Overall, when we first saw this movie it was confusing and a second watching would likely clear things up, at least for Brad.
